About the Event

In 2025, the Disability & Philanthropy Forum will be offering a two-day virtual Learning Institute focused on Climate and Disability Justice. People with disabilities are both the most vulnerable and the most overlooked population when it comes to addressing the effects of climate change. The Center for Disaster Philanthropy highlights that this is because disabled people are more likely to experience poverty, thus further elevating risk.

Climate justice and disability justice are interconnected. It is important to understand this connectedness through the lens of the 10 Principles of Disability Justice by Sins Invalid. As Mary Robinson Foundation’s Principles of Justice of Climate Justice states, “Climate justice links human rights and development to achieve a human-centered approach, safeguarding the rights of the most vulnerable people and sharing the burdens and benefits of climate change and its impacts equitably and fairly. Climate justice is informed by science, responds to science and acknowledges the need for equitable stewardship of the world’s resources.”

As such, the 2025 Learning Institute will bring together leaders in the climate and disability justice space, shining a spotlight on three key areas: 1) The impact of climate change and the work of disabled activists to mitigate it, 2) The future of disability-inclusive climate justice work and how to build resilience, and 3) What philanthropy can do to support the disability community in fighting climate change.

The Learning Institute will also emphasize:

  • Disability justice, rights, and inclusion is core to every social justice movement.
  • Foster connections across leaders in climate and disability justice spaces.
  •  Move philanthropic organizations to take action in support of climate and disability justice (you can start here!)
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration between philanthropic sector and disabled leaders in this field.
