Centering Disability Rights and Justice in Philanthropic Practice
In this session from CHANGE Philanthropy’s 2021 Unity Summit, Emily Ladau, Digital Content & Community Manager for the Disability & Philanthropy Forum, and Sandy Ho, Program Director of the Disability Inclusion Fund at Borealis Philanthropy, share perspectives on disability rights and justice frameworks as ways for philanthropy to move equality and equity forward. Both Emily and Sandy have lived experiences as disabled people whose consulting work has ranged from community organizing to cross-movement engagement that elevates disability rights and justice strategies to dismantle systemic oppression.
This interactive session provided attendees with tools to apply to their existing philanthropic work by identifying and expanding on how disability rights and disability justice converge and diverge. It also included a reflective activity to encourage philanthropic professionals to connect these tools with their own work to begin to recognize gaps in their practices.
